11 Plus guide

Choosing 11 Plus tuition in Harrow

What good 11 Plus support looks like, and the questions worth asking before you sign up.

Why Harrow families plan ahead

Harrow has no state grammar schools, so children usually sit entrance tests for schools in Barnet, Enfield, Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire. Each school sets its own test, so tuition should match the schools you are aiming for.

What lessons should cover

  • Maths: arithmetic, problem solving and multi-step reasoning
  • English: comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and creative writing
  • Verbal Reasoning: word patterns, codes and logic
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning: shapes, sequences and spatial skills
  • Timed practice in the style of the schools you are applying to

Group lessons or one-to-one?

Small groups build exam stamina and let children learn alongside peers. One-to-one lessons suit children who need targeted help with a specific gap, or extra stretch. Many families combine the two in the final months.

Questions to ask a tuition centre

  • Is the centre Ofsted-registered and are tutors DBS checked?
  • Will my child be assessed before starting?
  • How often will I get feedback on progress?
  • Do you run timed mock tests?
  • Can lessons be taken online if we can’t attend in person?
