Why mocks matter
The 11 Plus is as much about timing and calm as knowledge. Sitting tests in a real exam setting helps children manage nerves and pace themselves.
When to start
Start with untimed practice in Year 5, then move to timed sections. Full mock exams are most useful in the months before tests in September of Year 6.
Turning results into progress
- Review every mistake together and note the question type
- Group errors into themes such as fractions or inference
- Practise those themes before the next paper
- Track timing as well as scores
- Praise effort and improvement to protect confidence
Match the format
Schools near Harrow use different tests, from Buckinghamshire’s Secondary Transfer Test to schools’ own papers in Barnet and Enfield. Practise in the style of your chosen schools.

Common questions
How many practice papers should my child do?
Quality matters more than quantity. One paper reviewed carefully is worth more than several marked and forgotten.
Does Excel Academy run timed practice?
Yes. Our 11 Plus groups include timed practice and regular feedback for parents, at our Harrow centre and online.
